...as they manifest themselves at the office. You'll definitely see some of the traits and behaviors described in the people you're working with. But... when it comes to coping with these types, as the title promises, I found the book short on practical methods for dealing with problem people. In some cases, the books states there's little or nothing that can be done about jerks on the job.

Excellent "Handbook" for navigating toxic personalities
"Toxic Coworkers" was an easy read, and it delivers what the cover promises: "How to Deal with Dysfunctional People." Covering all the major players- all 10 of the personality disorders described by the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), it is an excellent resource for identifying exactly what type of problematic personality you might be dealing with, allowing the reader to then focus their search for additional literature pertaining to the specific personality disorder at hand.

Not only do the authors provide realistic and DO-ABLE solutions and strategies, their advice is organized by both which disorder you are dealing with, as well as the reader's relationship with the personality-disordered individual. (i.e. Boss/Administrator, Coworker, or Subordinate.) Additionally the book can be used as a guide for dealing with other toxic personalities in your life- a "parent" can substitute for the boss, a sibling or neighbor for "coworker", or a child...

This book might be one of the most understated books of its kind in the Marketplace. I teach at Carnegie Mellon University's, Heinz College and initially selected this book to be a brief part of my Masters Course. Over the past four years, I have spent more and more time on this book as at least 2-4 students a year tell me that they believed they got a job offer because of this book.

I have had this book for a few weeks and the binding of the book has completely come apart, not a happy camper when you are a nursing student and your book is falling apart. Spending the amount of money on this book to have it fall apart under normal conditions is ridiculous. I could see it failing apart if it was not being taken care of but I am posting picture so you guys can see. It looks like they tried to re-glue it together. I need to see about getting a replacement!!!

In these days of intense debate over health care reform, this should be a non-fiction best-seller. Written as a textbook to inform medical students in the area of health policy, Dr. Barr integrates issues of culture, economics, and medicine in a highly readable overview of our current U.S. healthcare system. He illustrates a number of problems by contrasting the evolution of our healthcare system, and the strongly held political/cultural assumptions that underlie it, with the evolution and values underlying the Canadian system. He is realistic about the struggles of both systems. A number of U.S. practices and assumptions don't make for better medicine. This text goes a long way towards helping the reader understand the problems in ways that are necessary before tackling solutions. Dr. Barr offers several critical options (some implicit and others explicit) for improving U.S. health care.

Informative, well formatted, and thorough, but not to the point of boredom

As a college student looking to pursue a career in medicine, I picked this book up hoping to develop at least a fundamental knowledge about the field I will (hopefully) be working in. It answered just about every question I had beforehand, and it did so in a way that made it easy for someone with little prior knowledge to understand. I was also pleasantly surprised by the relatively unbiased opinions it provided in regards to healthcare, and any opinions that were listed were well supported with facts and figures. After having read this book, I can now effectively participate in (somewhat) sophisticated discussions regarding the U.S. healthcare system, how it works, and in what direction it is heading. A great read for anyone considering a career in healthcare, or someone just looking to gain a little knowledge on the subject.

Engaging, informative, well-written, and timely

I am a physician, former researcher, and public health officer. My primary work is public health practice and administration. I needed to get up-to-date on health care reform and I chose this book because of it's historical approach. I was not disappointed -- in fact, I was blown away how good it was! Dr. Barr is able to synthesize a complex topic. I especially like how he includes Canada's health care system as a comparison. This book is best for readers with a health background. This is a gorgeous book. Dr Jess has done a fantastic job blending technical know-how into an easy-to-follow guide. Review :
Convenient but incomplete

The conversion of the text from the written book to the e-book version is somewhat garbled. For example, the subscripts and super scripts seem to give them the most trouble. However, the biggest complaint I have is that the tables and photos are only scanned in, and are not re-sizable. In many cases, the text within is so garbled as to be useless. Finally, the instructor of the course set much of the reading material to reference specific page numbers in the hard cover text (i.e. read pages 84-88, or look at table on page 1014). This makes the references all but impossible, as the e-book does not provide true page references. Found that I may have saved a few bucks, and perhaps a few pounds, but the learning experience was made tremendously more challenging.

Know your statistics before reading this book, and especially before entering a class which uses it as a required text book.

It was an ok overall view of Epidemiology. But I highly recommend taking a refresher statistics course if your Epi class is using this book because having a basic understanding of how statistics works in research is really beneficial. It also helps to understand what different studies are conducted and for what purpose that method of study was chosen for a particular disease/problem. My last statistics course was in 2006 and I hardly remembered anything and this book did not help. It doesn't give clear definitions on key terminology. Regardless I ended up Taking a Withdraw pass on the course and am taking a stats class this up coming semester.

Good textbook for epidemiology

I needed this textbook for my epidemiology class and while I don't normally enjoy reading through textbooks, this one was actually quite pleasing. I liked looking at all the figures & tables incorporated throughout the text. It's well organized and well written. It was first daunting to see how thick it was, but was actually an easy read compared to some other textbooks I've came across.

Horrible book and poorly written. Grammatical errors throughout the book and it is not an easy read. it gives a lot of useless information that makes me think " what did I just read?" I hope to never purchase another book from these authors again.

I had to buy this book for my community nursing class. Please know, this book has LOTS of fluff. I guess since I am used to med surg and acute books with factual, succinct information and this book goes too far into examples and extra.

Pro: its a paper back (lighter weight)
Con: its a paper back (easier to rip, "auto" closes because the book is light weight).

If you HAVE to buy this book, look for a used version. It's not bookshelf worthy after purchasing so minimize it's use and resell it.

I only purchased this book as a requirement for a public health class. I find the reading to be very tedious, boring,and poorly layed out. While the material is not at all difficult, the formatting makes it impossible to pay attention.

Poor choice.

This book is poorly written and poorly organized. I am in my last semester of nursing school and I am so disappointed in this book. Perhaps it is written on a graduate level and is not suited to undergraduate study? I should be studying for a community test right now, but have such a hard time making myself open this book. I can spend hours reading a chapter and not have learned anything. Or worse -- learned something wrong.

I like to read, and I depend on reading chapters in order to pass exams. But this book does not help me grasp any of the concepts, much less be able to apply them on exams.

If you're reading this, I know you probably HAVE to buy this book and I am sorry about that. I just wish instructors would think twice before choosing this as a textbook for their courses. Reading it has been frustrating, to say the least. If I wasn't so far into the semester I would get a more readable book to help me learn this subject.

I am familiar with this new public health text. As a community/public health educator of over 25 years I find this textbook readable for undergraduates and catalyzing specifically because cases are integrated in the text. This allows the reader and learner to apply the knowledge shared. This is accomplished across a reasonable amount of chapters (24) as opposed to 40 or more in other textbooks. For a student the amount of money paid for a book should be reflective of the degree of use. A semester is self-limiting in length and in the case of this book the pertinent areas of community and public health are represented realistically in the time frame.
The scholarly nature of the book is excellent with specific referencing to evidence-based practice from refereed community, public health, and research literature throughout. Authors are of national and international reputation in each chapter. The illustrations are colorful and attractive and in each chapter there is a respectful...

I am a sex therapist and sex educator, teaching at a large graduate school in the midwest. I use this book as a required text in my 'Treatment Strategies for Sexual Dysfunction' class. It is not only an excellent self-help book, it teaches clinicians how to think about and treat sexual difficulties. Barry McCarthy and Michael Metz are simply the best at what they do. I recommend this book to clients, students, and colleagues.

The most amazing thing about this book is it's approach to the matter of premature ejaculation. It gives you an answer for all your questions. It means that you'll get to know which type of PE you have and how you have obtained it. Then it gives you the procedure how to cure it. This is particulary good in the way that you know which circumstences caused your PE, which aspects of your life you have to concentrate on and which to change. When you know these facts you'll get more comfortable and self-confident because it gives you the impression that PE is something that is cureable.

I have already read several books on this matter. The BEST Sex Book I've Ever Read. The BEST Life Book I've Ever Read.
Come As You Are is absolutely the best sex book I've ever read. I used to buy so many trying to figure out how desire and arousal worked and while I learned good things, this was the book that felt like a warm hug that explained everything and how I could make this work for me. What I did not expect was to learn so much about my brain, and how *exactly* that was connected to sex, and why feeling joyful and content in life in general applies to sex specifically. I'd heard that sex and life were intertwined; the whole "it's all connected" but it never made sense until reading Emily Nagoski detailing HOW and WHY.

So all of Emily's blog posts come to life in this book, and every time I re-read chapters, I feel like the science connects in a deeper way. She covers attachment, sex that advances the plot in relationships, emotions, and mindfulness, just to name some topics. If you read only one book on human sexuality, make it Come as You Are. This isn't your standard sex book. There are no promises here that learning one trick will drive you or your lover wild. But there is a lot of science, presented in an approachable manner, that provides great insight into how people work sexually (and, to be honest, in general as well). The book's stated audience is women, but I think anyone can benefit from the science that Nagoski covers in her book, regardless of sex. Sure, if you are a guy you'll read some things that don't directly apply to you, but I recommend you read this book anyway. It is that important.

Why? Because what this book teaches you is immently important to your health, your sexual well being, and just general understanding of how you, and those you are intimate with, work. Magnificent!

This is an astonishingly good book - written with warmth, wisdom, humor, and heart. Although it's designed to be a self-help book for the general public, I have a suspicion its greater value will be in the fresh and original ideas it will offer to sex therapists. I look forward to using some of Nagoski's assessment, education, and treatment techniques in my own sex therapy practice. The book is also a cornucopia of clinically relevant behavioral science research. I believe many sex clinicians will find themselves returning to it again and again for inspiration and guidance.
