This book might be one of the most understated books of its kind in the Marketplace. I teach at Carnegie Mellon University's, Heinz College and initially selected this book to be a brief part of my Masters Course. It's enough to shift your view of how health care technology can be much more effective than it currently is...

Very poorly written with countless typos and misspellings. Information is inaccurate. The book was clearly not written by someone who has actually ever worked in health care. Additionally, this book has an anti-nursing agenda. For such a large group a health care providers who play an incredible role, nursing was only mentioned briefly. In the few instances this profession was mentioned, blatant misinformation was given. Many of the valuable contributions of nurses to US health care were outright omitted. This book is read by college students who grow up to be hospital administrators. No wonder many have such a lack of respect for the nursing profession.

Great Book

Current, relevant and informative. It will help anyone who is in a Graduate level intro course. Not boring at all.

Fundamentals of US Health Care

After a quick run through, I am convinced that you have a real winner here. It is certainly an attractively printed book with excellent illustrations and contrasting print to highlight different sections. The scope of the topics covered and the issues of concern are impressive. After reading some of the chapters that I was particularly interested in, I was impressed with how well they were covered for a novice (student starting out in the subject). If such a student wants to learn more there are citations that they can read in more detail.

If I were teaching Health Policy and Administration 101, I would definitely assign this book as required reading. I am sure this book will become the preeminent textbook for such a course. Congratulations on a job well done.

Written as a textbook to inform medical students in the area of health policy, Dr. Barr integrates issues of culture, economics, and medicine in a highly readable overview of our current U.S. healthcare system. He illustrates a number of problems by contrasting the evolution of our healthcare system, and the strongly held political/cultural assumptions that underlie it, with the evolution and values underlying the Canadian system. He is realistic about the struggles of both systems. A number of U.S. practices and assumptions don't make for better medicine. This text goes a long way towards helping the reader understand the problems in ways that are necessary before tackling solutions. Dr. Barr offers several critical options (some implicit and others explicit) for improving U.S. health care.

Informative, well formatted, and thorough, but not to the point of boredom

As a college student looking to pursue a career in medicine, I picked this book up hoping to develop at least a fundamental knowledge about the field I will (hopefully) be working in. It answered just about every question I had beforehand, and it did so in a way that made it easy for someone with little prior knowledge to understand. I was also pleasantly surprised by the relatively unbiased opinions it provided in regards to healthcare, and any opinions that were listed were well supported with facts and figures. After having read this book, I can now effectively participate in (somewhat) sophisticated discussions regarding the U.S. healthcare system, how it works, and in what direction it is heading. A great read for anyone considering a career in healthcare, or someone just looking to gain a little knowledge on the subject.

Engaging, informative, well-written, and timely

I am a physician, former researcher, and public health officer. My primary work is public health practice and administration. I needed to get up-to-date on health care reform and I chose this book because of it's historical approach. I was not disappointed -- in fact, I was blown away how good it was! Dr. Barr is able to synthesize a complex topic. I especially like how he includes Canada's health care system as a comparison. This book is best for readers with a health background. 4 Stars for content. Like 2 stars for kindle e-book version. The inability to copy and paste quotes (or questions to place into a word document) is beyond annoying. The lack of page numbers makes locating assignments a ridiculous chore. I will pay $5-$10 more for the VitalSource version next time which not only allows me to copy and paste, but provides me with a citation as well. Also, VitalSource includes page numbers. This was the first and last time I will use Amazon for an e-textbook, very sorry to say.

Chapters are small and topics are simple. The book is realy for people who are going to have little to do with the financial end of running a practice. It provides a general overview so a manager can have general idea of what's going in that department. The accompanying dvd does little to enhance understanding. Needed this book for a class. It gave basic concepts, but didn't go into mych detail. This is great for a person with no finance background. I found it to be very vague with explanations.

Poorly written and unhelpful
This book consists mainly of definitions with very little explanatory prose. As such, it is not very useful for didactic purposes and would only be of questionable value as a reference book.

Most chapters are a few pages long and are accompanied with extensive, needlessly wordy introductions. For example, a subheading may say "Distinctions Among Fixed, Variable, and Semivariable Costs". The next paragraph reads, "This chapter emphasizes the distinctions among fixed, variable, and semivariable costs because this knowledge is a basic working tool in financial management. The manager needs to know the difference between fixed and variable costs to compute contribution margins and break-even points. The manager also needs to know about semivariable costs to make good decisions about how to treat these costs." As you can see, this text is not really explanatory and simply repeats over and over again the importance of the material it purports to teach.
