From clean drinking water, to seat belts, to immunizations, the impact of public health on every individual is undeniable. For undergraduates, an understanding of the foundations of public health is an essential step toward becoming an educated citizen. Public Health 101: Healthy People––Healthy Populations provides a big-picture, population perspective on the determinants of health and disease and the tools available to protect and promote health. It examines the full range of options for intervention including use of the healthcare system, the public health system, and society-wide systems such as laws and taxation. Through case studies, vignettes, and extensive examples, readers will come away with a clear understanding of how public health affects them in their everyday lives. They will learn and apply frameworks for thinking about the issues of public health and gain a deeper understanding about the health news they are exposed to each day. Key Features: Public Health 101 fully implements the curriculum framework, learning objectives, and “enduring understandings” of undergraduate public health education as recommended by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U)* and the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR). Frameworks for thinking, checklists, and step-by-step examples provide students with hands-on practice. Case studies, vignettes, and extensive illustrations reinforce the materials and provide interactive exercises for classroom discussions, homework, and examinations. Review :
Good Textbook
I purchased this book for my son's college course; he says the textbook is excellent with facts and includes topics that are noteworthy -- and he rec'd an "A". And at a reasonable price.

Unnecessary access code
It's in great condition... I just didn't need the access code/ CD for my class, which made this book a lot more expensive than I was hoping for.

As a novel it would be fine, not really great as a textbook.
I rented this book from Amazon for a class I'm taking. The rental is perfectly fine, if I was reviewing for that, I'd give it 4.5 stars. There is very little writing and highlighting. The only reason I'd give it 4.5 instead of 5 is that the supplemental disk isn't with it. I haven't needed it, but it would be nice to have if I wanted it.

This 3 star review is for the book itself. It's okay, but it's very badly laid out for someone who knows nothing about public health. I'm taking this class online which means I have to learn from the textbook, something this book is not conducive to doing. The key terms often don't give a solid definition, the sections often don't really go with the headings and have random sentences that would have been better placed in another section. There are a ton of footnotes, many of which should probably be an actual part of the text and the boxes/tables/figures are often unnecessary and have you flipping back and forth in the chapter...

Review :
Know your statistics before reading this book, and especially before entering a class which uses it as a required text book.
It was an ok overall view of Epidemiology. But I highly recommend taking a refresher statistics course if your Epi class is using this book because having a basic understanding of how statistics works in research is really beneficial. It also helps to understand what different studies are conducted and for what purpose that method of study was chosen for a particular disease/problem. My last statistics course was in 2006 and I hardly remembered anything and this book did not help. It doesn't give clear definitions on key terminology. Regardless I ended up Taking a Withdraw pass on the course and am taking a stats class this up coming semester.

Good textbook for epidemiology
I needed this textbook for my epidemiology class and while I don't normally enjoy reading through textbooks, this one was actually quite pleasing. I liked looking at all the figures & tables incorporated throughout the text. It's well organized and well written. It was first daunting to see how thick it was, but was actually an easy read compared to some other textbooks I've came across.

Five Stars
The book has updated epidemiological scientific information.

Review :
Not easy to understand
I bought this book as a requirement for a grad school class and I'm not happy with it. It's very wordy and doesn't help much in understanding/solving math problems. Also, it uses a lot of graphs/tables and then references them in the text but the problem is that the text and the graph/table are on separate pages so you keep having to flip back and forth to see what she's talking about. I've read other explanations of a lot of her topics and find that it clicks much better when I'm reading explanations from other sources. I find myself re-reading what she's written multiple times without the concepts making too much sense. I wish her explanations were more concise so I wouldn't find myself zoning out while reading the wording commentary.

No answer key for practice questions
This book is fairly easy to understand. The only negative aspect about it is that there is no 'key' or answers to the practice questions at the end of the chapter. My professor emailed the publisher and is waiting for the answers to be sent to him. It is the 4th week of class, however, and my professor has not received the answer key.

Essentials of making your students' heads spin
This book is god awful when it comes to structure, variety, and explaining in a concise manner. Starting with structure, the book is very table and detail heavy. This makes for a frustrating combination because while details are typically appreciated especially in a statistics book, certain paragraphs will refer to tables that are sometimes a few pages over either because there is so much detail or so many damn tables. This involves flipping back and forth constantly between pages so you can figure out what the author is talking about and that makes studying this material absolutely tedious. As for variety, there is not much of a wide breadth of studies that make the book interesting. It deals with the Framington Heart Study heavily and little else. This may have its advantages insofar as its consistency keeps readers from getting confused but it makes for one of the most monotonous reads I have ever had in a textbook or any book for that matter. Finally, though I previously mentioned...

Successfully tested in the authors' courses at Boston University and Harvard University, this text combines theory and practice in presenting traditional and new epidemiologic concepts. Broad in scope, the text opens with five chapters covering the basic epidemiologic concepts and data sources. A major emphasis is placed on study design, with separate chapters devoted to each of the three main analytic designs: experimental, cohort, and case-control studies. Full chapters on bias, confounding, and random error, including the role of statistics in epidemiology, ensure that students are well-equipped with the necessary information to interpret the results of epidemiologic studies. An entire chapter is also devoted to the concept of effect measure modification, an often-neglected topic in introductory textbooks. Up-to-date examples from the epidemiologic literature on diseases of public health importance are provided throughout the book. The Third Edition is a thorough update that offers: • New examples, the latest references, and public health statistics. • Nearly 50 new review questions. • Updated discussion of certain epidemiologic methods. • New figures depicting epidemiologic concepts.

Review :
I'm pretty mixed on this book
I'm pretty mixed on this book. Some of the chapters are very clear, concise and helpful. Others kind of leave you scratching your head. Were there multiple authors?

I cant believe I am writing a review of a text book! This one is pretty darn good for Epi and the answers to the chapter review questions are in the back. It is easy to understand and well laid out. OMG i just became a huge dork!

Better than many of the other textbooks that tackle the subject
I've read a few epidemiology textbooks and this one has been the most accessible of the bunch - although including formulas and their explanations there is plenty of content that isn't focused on formula digestion. It also presented observational studies, and case-control study designs in particular, in a more contemporary and balanced light without the disdain that is easily recognized in other texts. As a textbook or access point for interested readers I think it serves quite well.
