For undergraduates, an understanding of the foundations of public health is an essential step toward becoming an educated citizen. Public Health 101: Healthy People––Healthy Populations provides a big-picture, population perspective on the determinants of health and disease and the tools available to protect and promote health. It examines the full range of options for intervention including use of the healthcare system, the public health system, and society-wide systems such as laws and taxation. Through case studies, vignettes, and extensive examples, readers will come away with a clear understanding of how public health affects them in their everyday lives. They will learn and apply frameworks for thinking about the issues of public health and gain a deeper understanding about the health news they are exposed to each day. Key Features: Public Health 101 fully implements the curriculum framework, learning objectives, and “enduring understandings” of undergraduate public health education as recommended by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U)* and the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR). Frameworks for thinking, checklists, and step-by-step examples provide students with hands-on practice. Case studies, vignettes, and extensive illustrations reinforce the materials and provide interactive exercises for classroom discussions, homework, and examinations. Review :
Good Textbook
I purchased this book for my son's college course; he says the textbook is excellent with facts and includes topics that are noteworthy -- and he rec'd an "A". And at a reasonable price.
Unnecessary access code
It's in great condition... I just didn't need the access code/ CD for my class, which made this book a lot more expensive than I was hoping for.
As a novel it would be fine, not really great as a textbook.
I rented this book from Amazon for a class I'm taking. The rental is perfectly fine, if I was reviewing for that, I'd give it 4.5 stars. There is very little writing and highlighting. The only reason I'd give it 4.5 instead of 5 is that the supplemental disk isn't with it. I haven't needed it, but it would be nice to have if I wanted it.
This 3 star review is for the book itself. It's okay, but it's very badly laid out for someone who knows nothing about public health. I'm taking this class online which means I have to learn from the textbook, something this book is not conducive to doing. The key terms often don't give a solid definition, the sections often don't really go with the headings and have random sentences that would have been better placed in another section. There are a ton of footnotes, many of which should probably be an actual part of the text and the boxes/tables/figures are often unnecessary and have you flipping back and forth in the chapter...
