I am a professor at University of California, Davis. For the last 10 years I have been impressed with the Stress Reduction training using Mindfulness. First developed my Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at University of Massachusetts, the training has proven effective at reducing the stress levels of thousands of people around the world. Many health plans now have added a Stress Reduction course because of its proven effects at enhancing health and well-being. Now Gina Biegel has tailored this training to fit the massive stresses that teenagers face today. The book has come out of her own work with teens, and is backed up by her research in scientific journals. I highly recommend this book to every teenager and parent. I wish I had read it when I was a teen!

Stress Reduction Workbook for Everyone
This is a really great workbook for everyone, and especially teens because the language, activities and insights feel open and real. As a teacher, I can imagine my students benefiting deeply from these stress reduction techniques, and from the self-reflection opportunities. Necessary, but a good read
I needed this book for my Health and Stress Psychology class, but ended up reading it for my own purposes.

This is a good book!
I actually had to have this book for a class and I decided I'm tired of getting stuck with schoolbooks, so I rented this one. This is one I may actually buy on purpose! It has a lot of information without droning on and on. It is easy to read and teaches so much so quickly. I think it would be a good reference book as well.

Criticism means a bad grade. For anyone interested
This book is required reading for students who take Dr. Seaward's classes. Therefore, he receives money for teaching and from their purchasing this book. As far as I can tell, most of his "classes" are on-line, so he can "teach" many classes at one time. Therefore it is especially important that the material is appropriately and expertly presented. However, there are many problems with both Dr. Seaward and the book.
First, Dr. Seaward has had no training in psychology. He received a Ph.D in Physical Education from the University of Maryland, not a degree in Philosophy as listed on his C.V. He makes an odd statement about Interdisciplinary Major: Health Psychology; Special Emphasis: Psychophysiology, which is not possible with a doctorate program.
He also states his membership in Phi Alpha Epsilon Honor Society: The University of Maryland, 1986. This is impossible for two reasons. Phi Alpha Epsilon is an academic, discipline-specific honor society for...

Review :
Useful but not awesome
First of all, I would have liked this book a lot more if not for the cutesy writing (using a lot of rhymes, like "spirits flagging, body sagging" or whatever) and overuse of cliches. Second, and maybe this is just because I've spent my entire life coping with ridiculous levels of stress, there was not a lot in this book that I didn't already know. I was also irritated by some of the oddly - given the author is female - sexist or patriarchal ideas expressed.

The very end of the book, however, had some useful strategies I haven't yet tried, so I'll be working with those. I'm glad I paid less than $2 for this book, though, because it definitely wasn't worth more than that for me.

Just what the doctor ordered
I've had a rough year so far, this book was just what the Doctor ordered (literally ;-) ). "Is this it?" was a question I asked myself often. I felt stuck and didn't know what to do. I've already tried a couple of the techniques described in this book and I already feel more in control of my own life. What I like about Geert's book is the simplicity. He makes difficult concepts easy to understand so I can actually apply and benefit from them. I've gotten an ton of AHA moments now. The book taught me more than the last 3 years of 'talk therapy' with my therapist have, at a fraction of the cost.

Eye-opener
What an eye-opener! I loved the chapter about the games our own mind plays on us. This was a huge insight for me and it has helped me react in a different way to the many obstacles I face every day. I've only just finished the book, but I was able to stand up for myself at work in a way I never did before. My boss even called me into his office to compliment me on my new attitude. Great book!

Geert's books and programs work so well for me because he writes and convey's in way in which he make his recommendations immediately accessible, at least for me! Additionally, when I need to go back to one of his books or programs, I can easily find what I need!
