So compelling! Could not put it down. Rufus is amazing and Mr. Soper is really a saint. I have already told lots of friends about this great story. It really changed the way I look at the homeless. Those horrible kids who did the filming are contemptible but the people who bought those videos are just as bad. This book is so revealing. This deserves to be made into a movie!

Michael Port is one of those rarities in the self-help genre: he’s knowledgeable and honest. He also writes well.

Here he instructs the reader on how to a more effective speaker or presenter, no matter what their role: small meeting to national television.

I have been speaking and presenting to groups for more decades than I care to admit and this book has everything I’ve learned along the way and more.

There is virtually no superfluity in this book. It’s all solid advice for a person standing in front of an audience.

For the person willing to assess themselves critically and willing to learn and adopt new techniques, this is a gem of an instruction manual on how to effectively present.

Great book on presenting speeches
My college minor was speech, and I work where I make public presentations on a weekly basis. So I'm no stranger to speaking in public.

Michael Port's work in "Steal the Show" is especially helpful for learning how to get started in presenting public presentations. While he does addresses material presentation, I would suggest that you will want additional guidance on doing the research and writing for your presentation, then apply the principles of Steal the Show as you edit and prepare the public side.

Port has taken some of the principles of good acting and applies them here to "everyday life" situations of speaking and presenting. I think he's chosen some good material, especially about developing an aura of certainty in your work.

I also find valuable the guidance about knowing what you want, generally, and how your speaking opportunities attempt to fill that in by filling in the small blocks.

I have been performing for the past 30+ years either at work or on stage as a conference presenter in front of hundreds this is an extremely good book. First off, this book has an incredible amount of content far more than I was expecting. So expect to spend some quality time to read through cover to cover. The book is also well structured and flows from one concept to the next in, what seems to me, a logical path.

There are sections of this book I want some of my colleagues and clients to read. Like the section on "Yes and ..." because too many naysayers really does throw off the momentum of progress. And I think a lot of the chapters would help people grow up and become adults. Especially some of the younger generation coming into the working ranks need to read the section on Risk. Because far too many are taking risks they shouldn't be especially when they keep saying...

Kind of eye opening

Unfortunately, my dating history is pretty... friendzone-centric, so the premise of the book really spoke to me. And I think it delivered for the most part, as it really allowed me to understood why I fall into the friendzone so much. He has 20 "chemistry principles", zero of which I did in the past.

I also really liked that the author really related to normal guys and didn't go all pickup artist on me. His examples to create chemistry were really realistic for even someone like me to do.

Chemistry broken down... seriously makes sense.

Not that this book has totally changed my life or anything, but it certainly has changed my outlook on how I interact with girls. The insights here are pretty cool, and I can see how each of them would make a girl more inclined to like someone. And for the author literally made me laugh out loud when he compared the feeling of shoplifting to how you want to make a girl feel, so true!

I can't believe the energy of this book! I'm reading it through tears - something huge is releasing just by reading it. I'm only three chapters in and I can feel something huge shifting. It's like I was standing on the precipice all this time and finally I'm ready to jump down and fly!

We Need More Books Like This
First off, this book includes an awesome collection of interviews. I was particularly excited for to see contributions from three great sex educators, Tristan Taormino, Wendy-O Matik, and Betty Dodson, and awesome comic artist Erika Moen.

The book is broken into seven chapters. Each of these chapters contains practical advice for navigating relationships. Most of these chapters also challenge the view that relationships should all progress in the same direction, towards an exclusive permanent marriage with children.

Loving Being Single suggests that you don't need to be in a relationship to be happy. Navigating Non-Monogamy tackles the idea that exclusivity is always preferable. Staying Childless by Choice takes on the pressure for everyone to have kids. On Never Getting Married discusses the reasons for not forming a legal union. And Knowing When To Split faces how sometimes ending a relationships is the best option.

Two chapters are a bit different...
Worth the read because it's relatable, but check out some of the recommended reading at the end of the book for more advice.

The book had great tips, but I felt like it ended on a very negative note, in that I felt like it basically said that no relationship would last forever, and that you would end up breaking up even with your "soul mate". I mean, don't get me wrong, the whole point of me reading the book was to get some perspective on open relationships, but in the end this one was kind of depressing like "It'll never work for anyone." Maybe I read it wrong.

It did have a lot of good constructive activities to do on your own, and with a partner, and a lot of recommended reading. But overall, this book reads more like a journal of someone working out their own relationship ideals and desires rather than someone trying to give good foundational advice based on personal experience, and other people's experiences.

A book I'll be talking about with people for years to come

Mirk has a gift for asking questions that lead to productive conversations. I can't imagine a better quality for a writer to bring to a book exploring present-day relationships.

Sex from Scratch is honest without being didactic from the very first paragraph: "Look, I don't know what I'm doing. Most advice books are written by people who say they're experts and they sell you on the notion that there are secrets inside that will transform your life. I have to tell you some bad news: I'm no expert. There are no secrets here. Only you can change your life. Sorry."

The blend of Mirk's openness with the "good insights, practical advice, and admissions of honest mistakes" in the book's interviews engaged me in a way that slipped right past my defenses. I was having loads of insights and conversations before I was halfway through.

I always have my eye out for authors who are interested in bringing together the scientific and the spiritual. If we assume (as I do) that there is reality to the existence of spiritual realms, beings, and principles, and that there is validity to the process of scientific inquiry, then it's obvious that the two must eventually meet. And this is in spite of the mistrust and downright animosity that partisans on both sides of this divide often show toward each other.

This book is a very welcome step toward the integration of these two perspectives on "reality." It is not a lofty philosophical treatise, but rather a down-to-earth book that couples an engaging travelogue (about a trip to heaven!) with a very practical set of tips for improving readers' spiritual, emotional, and physical lives

I've been in Silicon Valley for twenty years; I've worked at several dozen startups; I'm now with a venture funding group from China. Mahendra Ramsinghani's book is far away the most authoritative overview of how venture capital works. He uncovers how VCs get their money from investors (LPs) and their motivations and goals. This matters because it determines the framework within which the VCs work.

The book also describes the interplay among partners within VC firms (the GPs) and how that affects authority, decision-making, and selection of funding. As with LPs, he also describes motivations and goals of the VCs.

If you're building a startup, you must understand these issues. Decisions by others will affect your startup. The extensive information is invaluable.

This was required reading for our venture capital law class and it was one of the rare books that I was happy I encountered while in school. I have it highlighted and even referenced it after I started practicing law. The book was very well written and structured. I would recommend it highly for lawyers or non-lawyers alike, though probably even more for non-lawyers (though it has plenty of great tips and insights for anyone practicing venture capital law or interested in the investment side of venture capital).

Invest the time into this book!

This book is chock full of nuggets about the true inner workings of VC. Mahendra uses dozens of real life stories to illustrate that this business is not really about the money, but about the people. He captures how the intangibles really matter in this (and most every other) business. For an entrepreneur, getting funded is simply not about forwarding a business plan or a slide deck and waiting for a check. There is a delicate kabuki dance involved with layer after layer of subtlety. And understanding the unwritten rules can be the difference between a Term Sheet and a "Keep us updated on your progress" response.

From a VC perspective, this is a real "How To" book. For folks aspiring to become VCs, there is plenty on meat here. Even for seasoned VCs, plenty of thoughts as to what could be considered best practices. Worth every minute.

Mahendra takes a very complex and veiled subject and makes it less mysterious and approachable. A must reac!

He's right. I was there.
James O'Shea has filled in the blanks on what I know to be true. I was a long-time employee of The Times and witnessed many of the disgraces that Tribune and Zell put us through. Perhaps those who find it difficult to follow have a hard time jumping from one newspaper culture to another but believe me, having a "strange" culture thrust upon yours is also very, very difficult. Yes, the first thing Tribune did was get rid of the people in HR and vow to "change the culture." They did indeed change it, they demoralized, deflated and beat it down. The employees as a group went from being in love with their company to being in mourning for it.

The problems for newspapers as O'Shea outlines are true, to which I would add that the American public has lost a great deal of its intelligence and is happy with "headlines." (I would refer you to another book, "Idiot America.")

Newspapers are about "the truth."
This book about newspapers seems like it's adapted from "The Twilight Zone."
And that's not a good thing for the people involved.
For those of us who still love newspapers, this is a must-read.
I trust the reportage from author O'Shea......his straight-forward style makes it a breezy read....even though I have no real concept behind the financial machinations that allowed this deal to happen.
We moved to Los Angeles in 1966, and since then, I doubt I've missed more than a handful of editions of The Times.
In the good old days, I couldn't wait to read Jim Murray, Jack Smith, Paul Conrad and the Wizard of Id.
Now, I wince each morning when I remove the paper from the plastic bag, fearing some new degradation to the product.
(I love the writers, editors and reporters, who despite the odds, put out the daily miracle).
But O'Shea's premise that newspapers are beholden to the community and not the stockholders...
Shareholder Greed & Management Incompetence: A Deadly Combination
