Interesting but will face stiff resistance from self righteous good government types.
Any political professional will nod their head in agreement as they read. Idealism is always the most potent enemy of pragmatism but pragmatism must ultimately prevail for government to succeed. Rauch does an outstanding job of detailing the unintended, but predicted, consequences of the long series of political "reforms" pursued over the past century. The only meaningful point he leaves out is that most of these reforms were in fact efforts to compel government to enact and implement a progressive policy agenda on the assumption that it must be what the people would want and support if only the politicians and special interests would get out of the way. As each reform fell short of producing the desired results (largely because the people were disinterested in or opposed to the progressive agenda) more and more "reforms" have been added. This ongoing process has eroded the functionality of government to the point it can no longer deliver either the always unrealistic...
Sure, read it, but don't be taken in. It's free and worth every penny.
The major position of the author is that achieving any goal in politics is made more difficult by the necessity for legitimacy, transparency, or accountability. Therefore efficient politics depends on deceit, secrecy, and immunity. The goal is power and the continuation of power among the group, and any reference to the good of the citizenry in general is irrelevant. This is as true of politics as of venial corporations, oligarchical governments, and criminal syndicates.

The current controversy over fast-tracking trade agreements demonstrates the point. Of course it is much easier for the executive to get the results he wants if he can work in secret and deny input and agreement to most of the groups and people who will be affected. It is the insiders, not the outsiders, who will get their way. Which, of course, is the main motive for "political realism."

And Jonathan Rauch is completely in favor of this. He thinks it's great.

Rauch brings into focus a developing school of thought that is questioning the efficacy of modern political reforms, including election changes such as primaries, ever-evolving campaign finance regimes, and legislative procedures such as earmarking. Rauch not only brings together these threads, but bravely adds his name to the list of those questioning not only so-called reforms, but the assumptions that underlie them (one sure to infuriate many: maximizing political participation by average Americans is not actually worthwhile).

Lots to digest in this short read, which certainly won't happen mere hours after I've finished it, but I can say this confidently: this book needs to be read widely in our political and academic communities and seriously considered. I'm glad the man who brought us "Kindly Inquisitors" years back put his mind to our modern political processes and argues just as fearlessly.

Having worked as a cross-country truck driver for the last decade or so, I've observed several trends adverse to the 'little guy' (drivers). One exception is that a number of companies are switching from paying on a 1099 (driver is an 'independent contractor,' responsible for paying self-employment taxes, and receiving no benefits - overtime, disability, paid sick, holiday or vacation leave, retirement, unemployment insurance) to a W-2 basis, so at least the driver isn't hit so hard by the self-employment tax; some are even providing a semblance of benefits (vacation, subsidized health care). On the other hand, there has been an increase in 'owner-operators,' who by virtue of owning/leasing their own truck become responsible for maintenance (an encouragement to take better care of the truck, and improve fuel economy), as well as keeping the truck moving so as to cover lease/purchase requirements. He's right. I was there.
James O'Shea has filled in the blanks on what I know to be true. I was a long-time employee of The Times and witnessed many of the disgraces that Tribune and Zell put us through. Perhaps those who find it difficult to follow have a hard time jumping from one newspaper culture to another but believe me, having a "strange" culture thrust upon yours is also very, very difficult. Yes, the first thing Tribune did was get rid of the people in HR and vow to "change the culture." They did indeed change it, they demoralized, deflated and beat it down. The employees as a group went from being in love with their company to being in mourning for it.

The problems for newspapers as O'Shea outlines are true, to which I would add that the American public has lost a great deal of its intelligence and is happy with "headlines." (I would refer you to another book, "Idiot America.")

Sam Zell and his clowns were every bit as disgusting as O'Shea claims. I saw them give their...

Newspapers are about "the truth."
This book about newspapers seems like it's adapted from "The Twilight Zone."
And that's not a good thing for the people involved.
For those of us who still love newspapers, this is a must-read.
I trust the reportage from author O'Shea......his straight-forward style makes it a breezy read....even though I have no real concept behind the financial machinations that allowed this deal to happen.
We moved to Los Angeles in 1966, and since then, I doubt I've missed more than a handful of editions of The Times.
In the good old days, I couldn't wait to read Jim Murray, Jack Smith, Paul Conrad and the Wizard of Id.
Now, I wince each morning when I remove the paper from the plastic bag, fearing some new degradation to the product.
(I love the writers, editors and reporters, who despite the odds, put out the daily miracle).
But O'Shea's premise that newspapers are beholden to the community and not the stockholders...
Shareholder Greed & Management Incompetence: A Deadly Combination
James O'Shea had a ringside seat at the Chicago Tribune and then the Los Angeles Times as incompetent executives and greedy stockholders -- few of them with any clue how newspaper journalism really works -- sucked the lifeblood out of them in tragic mergers, which affected other newspapers, including the Baltimore Sun where I worked for 43 years.
