Great book, quick read!

Bolman & Deal's Reframing the Path to School Leadership is an interesting read. They use four frames of reference--the political frame, human resource frame, the structural frame, and the symbolic frame--to discuss leadership, both on the classroom and school level.

They use a fictional cast of characters that includes new and veteran teachers, and new and veteran principals. At first I was wary of the fictional narrative, but I found it interesting and it kept me reading. At the end of each chapter, which includes a number of fictional scenarios on familair themes (beginning of the year, discipline, tracking, special education), there is a discussion part that I found very helpful.

I'm a beginning principal, and I found this book informative and enlightening. It's also written for teachers, and I think I would've found the book just as useful if I'd read it when I was still in the classroom.

Practical and Useful for Educators
Lee Bolman is an author, teacher, consultant, and respected speaker on the topics of leadership and organizations. Terrance Deal is an international lecturer and retired professor. Both have co-authored a number of leadership books, including Reframing Organizations: Artistry, Choice, and Leadership. Together, they present valuable information and tools to leaders worldwide.

In the second edition of Reframing the Path to School Leadership, Lee Bolman and Terrance Deal write for teachers and principals alike. This is a unique new teacher/principal guide because it isn't written as a how-to text but rather a novel. They use a fictional cast of new and veteran teachers and principals to guide readers through leadership frameworks (the political frame, human resource frame, the structural frame, and the symbolic frame). Leadership is addressed within the classroom and the larger school community. The storytelling is a little flat or predictable at times, so I probably wouldn't recommend it as a fiction book. But the unique presentation for a professional development text is refreshing, allowing me to overlook the occasional forced dialogue or contrived situation.

For veteran teachers and principals, though, I think it may just state what it already known without bringing much new to the table (except the unique storytelling approach instead of a textbook), so I would only rate it 3 stars if you're planning to read it on your own as a more experienced educator. I'm Kind of a Big Deal: And Other Delusions of Adequacy is Stefanie Wilder-Taylor's memory of her journey through Hollywood. After initially leaving home for New York, she realizes that California might be a better bet to achieving her dream of being an actress. Amusing anecdotes of the various jobs she has while trying to audition for acting jobs. Even more fun when she realizes that her manager's wife auditions for all the prime jobs! Little does she know that suffering through a dating show cattle call would lead to her promising career in show writing and show running. Finally, she finds something she enjoys doing that she can earn money.

Having never read any of Stefanie Wilder-Taylor's other books, I had no idea what to expect. This book exceeded my expectation. Several parts of the book were chest clutching funny. Her description of her struggle with alcoholism and the details of her relationship with her dad were poignant. The only part I disliked were the...
Wry memoir
Stefanie Wilder-Taylor's name is not familiar to me but I needed a laugh and I hoped this collection of essays would provide one or two given her experience as a stand up comedienne. Wilder-Taylor uses humour and witty asides to document her struggle to become famous, first in stand up, then as an actress until finally discovering her niche as a segment writer.

Predictably Stefanie enjoyed a rather wild adolescence in an unhappy home, and escaped to the bright lights of LA as soon as practicable. Stefanie describes supporting herself with a variety of low paying jobs from office temping to chauffeuring while auditioning for dubious television. Her experiences are fodder for some amusing anecdotes and Stefanie concisely illustrates the weird and wild of working and living in LA. With a padded resume she finally lands on her feet writing for television and I am dying to know if (as was implied without crossing legal boundaries)that really was Angie??

funny stuff

"I'm kind of a big deal" chronicles Stefanie Wilder-Taylor's life, growing up and eventually "making it" in Hollywood as a game shows writer. In similar style to her previous titles, Wilder-Taylor tells her story in separate anecdotes, and finds comedy in every situation she encounters.

Stories include everything from waitressing in New York, participating as an extra in Bob Dylan video, and participating in dating game shows---to stalking a guy she saw on TV, temporarily working as a limo driver to the rich and famous (Chevy Chase was nice, Lolita Davidovich not), trying her hand at becoming a stand-up comedian, and accidentally getting a break and finding employment as a game show writer.

The writing is pretty funny, and the author succeeds in keeping things light. This was a nice sequel to "It's not me, it's you," which I also read. Recommended for anyone who likes light comedy-centered memoirs, or is simply looking to be entertained.

a sweet romance..

This is a fun, sweet romance. Because of his father's will, the hero must find a bride to keep controlling interest in the company he has helped to build. The heroine is in dire need of funds. her father is battling cancer and in order to get an experimental drug, he needs money fast. Two people with a need. Each can help out the other so they enter into a deal to marry for one year, she gets the money and he gets the wife and control of his company.

Seems simple enough until feelings start to enter the picture. This is a very entertaining read. There is no sex involved so any age could read it. I think even the Christian readers would enjoy it. I definitely recommend it. The couple get their HEA after a bit of turmoil and ice cream!!!

heartwarming for the holidays
I admit it - back when I lived in the south and began missing the snow, few thing brought back that winter feeling like a cozy holiday romance, where you can practically taste the hot chocolate and feel the snow flakes. This year, I got lucky and receive an ARC of The December Deal, which hit all those warm fuzzy notes and gave me a serious hankering for ice cream.

World wanderer Lilia returns to her home town when her father takes ill. No matter how much she crunches the numbers, she can't afford his treatment. Businessman Luke has plenty of money, but needs a bride to keep ownership of his family business. With a chance meeting in a bar, the strangers decide to help each other out. I love how the characters played their motives close to the vest - even after a quickie marriage. It's a credit to the author that the marriage of convenience comes off as believable in a contemporary setting. As for the rest, no spoilers, but Volney does a great job tugging those heartstrings...
Fun and Festive Novella
This novella was everything I love and hate about short stories. I love that I could read it all in one sitting and get to the happy ending. I love that Volney was able to pack so much into such a short space that I felt I knew the characters, that Lilia was an old friend. I found myself rooting for both Lilia and Vincent. And I hated that it was over so soon. I wanted to hear more, see more, of these characters! I hope that Volney will write more books set in Casper and allow us to see more of Lilia and Vincent, as well as get to know some of their siblings that we saw peripherally in this story. Volney did a great job of building solid stories for both Lilia and Vincent that made it believable they would enter into their deal and also made them both likeable people. I especially liked that Vincent showed his immediate attraction to Lilia, admitted that he should have been more cautious in entering the deal, and struggled with thinking Lilia was shallow because of the money in spite...
