Perfectionism may seem like a worthy goal, but it’s actually a burden. When you believe you must be perfect, you live in constant fear of making mistakes. Most children don’t know what perfectionism is, yet many suffer from it. Nothing they do is ever good enough. School assignments are hard to start or hand in. Relationships are challenging, and self-esteem is low. Written to and for ages 9–13, this book helps kids understand how perfectionism hurts them and how to free themselves. Includes true-to-life vignettes, exercises, and a note to grown-ups.

Review :
I guess I will be the voice of dissent
We have a copy of the book from this series on worry & anxiety and really like it, so I had high hopes for this book. It is well written and a fun & easy read, but it went off a cliff for me when it got to the chapter about where perfectionism originates. In a nutshell the author states that your parents made you this way by harping on your imperfections & ignoring your achievements. As someone with perfectionist tendencies myself and who is a mother to a perfectionist/gifted child, I understand how deeply perfectionist kids feel the tiniest criticism. I think most parents who have half a clue know that your child is born with a temperament and you do the best you can to help them be prepared to face the world with the temperament they have. Telling young kids there parents screwed them up is not helpful. Needless to say I will not be passing this book onto my middle-schooler.

Good book
People always assume perfectionism is a good thing but taken to the extreme, it can be paralyzing. I like to have children's books that deal with emotional issues available for my kids to pick up on our home book shelf. When we first got this book, I read it with them and we used it to initiate conversations on the topic. For one thing, it helped my kids get perspective on their feelings. But I've seen them pick this book up to read on their own, even after we went through it. Even if my kids don't feel like talking to me- they can still get good advice on how to deal with their feelings. We have a good relationship, but I think all kids get tired of hearing advice from their parents. Some times when I try to talk to them about serious issues, it probably feels like a lecture. Books are less threatening. I have a few in this series and they are all good.

A thoughtful, practical, down-to-earth guide
Written by licensed psychologist and family & marriage therapist Thomas S. Greenspon, Ph.D., What to Do When Good Enough Isn't Good Enough: The Real Deal on Perfectionism is a guide written especially for young people, preteens and teenagers about what perfectionism is and learning how to deal with it. What to Do When Good Enough Isn't Good Enough emphasizes that perfectionism isn't just wanting to do well - it's an obsessive fear of performing less-than-perfect in any way, and is always harmful. Perfectionism can and often does interfere with the necessary hard work and learning process involved in undertaking any task; for example, a perfectionist might obsessively worry about a book report so much that he or she turns it in late (or not at all!) because too much time was wasted trying to write it perfectly. A thoughtful, practical, down-to-earth guide, enthusiastically recommended for grade and high school library shelves.

Review :
cute book
This book is cute for elementary students. It is a chapter book about bullying and how to handle bullies. It is good to let students borrow when they find themselves being bullied or to read out loud in small groups and discuss.

Great for Elementary kids!
I'm an elementary school counselor and have really enjoyed using this book with students. They love it! It is a great springboard for helping children become more assertive, and to role play and practice the tips and 'the plan' for dealing with others who tease or torment them.

Incomplete
Blue Cheese Breath and Stinky Feet: How to Deal With Bullies by Catherine Depino is not a bad book. It gives some good, practical advice on how to stand up to bullies. Unfortunately, it does not go far enough. It assumes its technique will work. But in reality, many times Depino's technique won't work. Bullies just keep coming - then what? The other way this book falls short is that it only addresses one type of bullying, the classic verbal abuse and threats of physical aggression. If you want a book to help your child who has to live in the real world, the book They Call Me Chicken: A Story of Courage by John Caporale, a psychologist, is the way to go. This book is for 3rd-6th graders and doesn't try to teach kids to stop others from teasing and bullying when they can't, but instead teaches kids how to cope with it in a manner where they can truly maintain their self-esteem. And what's more, it shows kids how to cope with all types of bullying situations, from the classic...
