A Character Driven 1930's New York City Caper Film, (sorry, Book)
The heading above says it all. A varied group of people, lodged in the Waldorf, circa 1930, trick and con each other, while a professional burglar fleeces them all. If that sounds like what you want, wrapped up in a snappy bow, then that is what you will get.

1930's Manhattan is nicely presented and framed. Lots of period touches make almost every panel interesting. Clothes, slang, dropped names, political discussions, attitudes, and class distinctions are true to the 30's, true to New York City, and true to the kinds of people who worked or stayed at the Waldorf.

From men selling apples on the sidewalk, to the Harlem Renaissance, to the right scotch and Chesterfield cigarettes, there is a wealth of detail, both in the drawings and tossed away in conversation, that sets the scene. Political commentary and portrayals of race and class divisions are there, although not addressed in any depth.

The Real Deal - A great graphic novel capturing the essence of a bygone era.

A great graphic novel. From the first page until the last page I didn't want to put it down. Case's art and story were a perfect marriage in telling a story that had the look and feel of a great old black and white film from the golden age of Hollywood. The story delivered a complete story that had a satisfying feel to it and yet I could see that there could be another chapter that has opened up for our three characters. Not having grown up in the thirties I still feel that from my perspective he caught the entire era perfectly mixing politics, humor, crime and race all in one beautiful rendered tome. With so much of the "comic book press" being given over to Marvel and DC gems like this are too often overlooked. It tells a complete story, has gorgeous art and is an engaging read. Just buy it.

Quarry meets a female Hitman
Thank you Hard Case Crime for bringing out these older books (this one from 1976) in a easy to read Trade Paperback size now with beautiful Robert McGinnis covers.

While these books can really be read in any order this is the third one printed. Author Max Allen Collins says in his afterward that this is his favorite of the original four published in the 1970's and I find myself in total agreement.

For those coming in late here is the background on Quarry (not his real name) is a former Hitman after having a despute with his Murder Broker , Quarry has aquirred his employers book of Hired Killers and now seeks them out and offers their victims a chance on turning the tables on their hired killers for a price.

While I am not sure if killing Killers makes you a more morally acceptable person, I do know it does make for a fun premise with some great stories.

Quarry Deals A Winning Hand

Quarry's Deal is the third in author Max Allan Collins' long-running series. This novel was originally published in the mid-1970's and it is a hoot to read about the styles and attitudes (mostly politically incorrect) of that time. This outing which features Quarry and a female hitman is a more leisurely paced than the first two Quarry novels, but that's all right since it gives Quarry more opportunities to interact with other characters and allow us to see his killer's mind take on events. The ending is satisfactory and a surprise to me even though I originally read this novel a quarter century ago (I guess forgetting thing with age can have its advantages occasionally).
I highly recommend this series and am glad to see Hard Case Crime republishing the early Quarry tales as well as showcasing new Quarry novels.

I discovered the Quarry novels through the Hard Case Crime series thanks to my wife. They are all fun, a little dark and quick reads. Collins is always a pleasure to read whether it is Quarry, Nolan, Heller, Ms. Tree or the Starr novels. You can't go wrong with Max Allan Collins.

Absolutely riveting from start to finish
I haven't read many legal thrillers in the past few years, but I think I am going to have to add more books of this genre to my future reading list - especially those written by Rebecca Forster. Hostile Witness is just a fantastic, completely absorbing read, the kind of book that makes you hate your job because having to get up early for work means having to set the novel aside in the wee hours of the morning just so you can get a few hours of sleep. Any thriller is best judged by the number of hours' sleep you miss, and Hostile Witness is right up there with the best of them.

Usually, legal thrillers have a few passages that are dry and boring or feature cardboard characters lacking any spark of life in them. Not so with Hostile Witness. Forster has given life to some vivid, remarkably human characters - the heroic, sympathetic lawyer who puts a painful past behind her to defend a young girl accused of arson and murder; the 16-year-old defendant, a troubled teen lost...
Sometimes interesting / often absurd
It helped that this book was free on Kindle when I ordered it... I had very mixed feelings about this novel. Some of the characters and narrative were done quite well, but there were a number of places where key scenes made no sense whatsoever. During a trial, for example, the main character (defense lawyer) began asking a hostile witness detailed questions about things that happened to him at specific ages ("Isn't it true that, when you were 6, such-and-such happened?"). The lawyer had just been told some vague information about the witness by someone who was unlikely to have known even the vaguest of details, yet seemed to have gleaned all this information from a brief conversation.

The book is also in dire need of a spell-checker and proofreading to correct confusing sentence structure and peculiar punctuation.

The "bad guys" (and there were several) were all unbelievable. The protagonists, however, were sympathetically drawn.

An Exciting Legal Thriller
I like a good deal. You know how when you go to the grocery store and you find your favorite cereal is buy one get one free, you almost feel like you've won some sort of lottery. Now, you know the store has upped the base price of the cereal, but you still snatch it up and through it your cart. There is a great feel to a two for one deal. That's how I have always felt about a good courtroom drama. You're getting two dramas for the price of one. The first drama is outside the courtroom. The incident, the lives affected, secrets, conspiracies and so much more pepper the events leading up to a trial. Then the trial, the legal maneuverings, the back room deals, the attorneys and judges, you can't get much better than that.
Recently there has been more and more legal thrillers that forgo the courtroom. The lawyer turned detective who solves the mystery without even filing a motion. While these books are often quite entertaining, I sometimes feel like I missed something. In Hostile...
