When you're the target of snubbing or teasing at school, it's easy to feel like everyone else has a group of friends and you're the only odd one out. The reality is that gossip and rumors hurt everyone, and often, even the most popular girls feel alone. Making your way through junior high and high school isn't easy, and it definitely requires more than the right shoes and lip gloss. You'll need a cool head and the confidence to be yourself in the face of serious social challenges.

This workbook will help you deal with cliques, teasing, and gossip, and show you how to avoid getting caught up in this hurtful pattern of behavior. Coping with Cliques also includes key strategies for sticking up for yourself, maintaining your self-esteem even when others tease you, and finding friends who like you for who you are.

The exercises in this workbook will help you to:

  • Handle Internet gossip and teasing
  • Stop feeling like you have to be sexy
  • Be assertive when necessary to gain respect and confidence
  • Find true friends and stop being hurt by friends who leave you out

Not reccomended
My mom bought this workbook for me, along with a few others. Most are wonderful in this series, but I was maybe 15 when my mom bought it for me. It's written a very cheesy, childish prospective. I couldn't deal with the topic at all. It seemed to rely a lot on self esteem which really bugged me. I guess it could help some girls but I wouldn't recommend it at all.

Great Book
Great quick lessons to use for small group and individual counseling groups. These lessons are suitable for middle school girls.

Pass on this one
I think the use of "cool talk" in this book makes it awkward. None of the teens I know talk in this manner so I can't use a book that attempts to be cool, but ends up just sounding lame. I have just about all the books in this series, but this is the first that I haven't been pleased with.

Way to be a CONFIDENT WOMAN!
I read this book and my friends can't wait for each other to read it, so 3 of them have already bought their own copies!
If you want a book on sexual positions and techniques, this book is not for you. However, if you are a woman who wants to learn that it is OK to be sexy and how to incorperate sexyness into everyday of your life (as well as redefine your idea about what it means to be "bad") this book is awesome! It is really about becoming an autonomous, confidant, adult woman! It's great!
My self-esteem is rising as I do the excersizes (don't worry, most of them are even FUN!) in the book. My posture has changed, I no longer have clothes in my warddrobe that I do not enjoy wearing, and it has opened up a whole range of wonderful conversation with my girls. In fact, if you liked this book or are interesting in hearing more from people that have read it, check out the Yahoo! Group "confident women"!
Basically, it is easy to read and full of great information for...
A Sexual Masterpiece!
I was browsing through my local book store when I came upon this book. I sat in there for about 2 hrs reading this book non-stop. It's incredible! I think it has enhanced my sexual self-esteem and desires. I discussed the book with my boyfriend, and he also read it..and learned a thing or two. Let's just say it has been a very energetic, and rough sexual experience for the both of us. He definetly knows what I want now!

This is an excellent book.
This book teaches women how to have strong self esteem as well as how to be the sexy woman we were all born to be. It teaches how to reach your natural sexiness without being sleazy or gaudy, it is simply feminine. It is full of information and an easy read with personal stories to aid in reaching the woman deep inside. I recommend this book to every woman whether you be single, dating, or married.

Here's a book just for girls beginning a new phase of their lives! This appealing and easy-to-follow guide for girls with intellectual disabilities is an introduction to the physical and emotional changes they'll encounter during puberty. Written on a third-grade reading level for preteens or young teenaged girls to read by themselves or with a parent, it's filled with age-appropriate facts, realistic illustrations and photos, icons, and a Q&A. The Girls' Guide to Growing Up advises girls about their changing bodies, privacy issues, and how to feel their best, including:

-What is puberty?
-Body changes (height & shape, breasts & bras, body hair, skin & blemishes, body odor)
-Emotional changes (moodiness & handling your feelings, sexual feelings & what to do about them, flirting do's & don't's)
-Periods (what to expect, using a pad)
-Hygiene (keeping face & body clean, showering, using deodorant)
-Privacy, safety & social appropriateness (private parts, rules for who can touch you & when, rules for touching others, what to do if you feel unsafe)

The Girls' Guide to Growing Up is written by an experienced sex educator who specializes in working with people with intellectual disabilities and who is also the author of the companion book, The Boys' Guide to Growing Up and the popular Teaching Children with Down Syndrome about Their Bodies, Boundaries, and Sexuality. Parents, physicians, schools, and support groups will want to share this encouraging book with girls to help answer their questions about puberty and reassure them it's all part of growing up.

Review :
A Must Have
I purchased this book back in December when it was first released to have for my 11 year old daughter with Down Syndrome. The book arrived around the same time a friend's daughter (ASD) had her first period so it was put to the test immediately and passed with flying colors!! It covered all the necessary information in a form that her daughter was able to use to successfully manage the surprise onset of her periods! ( she is also 11 and mom thought she had more time so no preparation had been done.)

The information is written in a clear, no frill, practical format with LOTS of very (graphic) helpful pictures that are also tasteful. We also loved the larger font that makes it easier to read. My own daughter has read this book repeatedly and she has asked many good questions that prove she is understanding the content!

I really can not say enough about this book! If you have a young lady with a developmental disability, you really NEED this book. Unlike the other...
Just what I wanted

I am a special ed. teacher. Usually our school nurse teaches family life to our fifth graders. This year it was left to the teachers. I was very nervous. I ended up making a presentation from different resources from the internet. I found this book just before the date to teach family life. I loved how they gave simple clear rules for flirting. The book was well organized. It discussed matters in simplest terms.

Great book for young pre-teens
I got tons of books regarding puberty and growing up. But I found none of them appropriate for my now 11 years old daughter.

This is the only book I found suitable to give to her to read now (other books are for when she's a bit older)

What I liked about this book was that it was very easy to ready with lots of illustrations.

It didn't give much details about genitals, sex and babies. Which is exacttly what I wanted for now.

Just cover about body changes, periods.

A great book to get the dialogue going...
I checked out this book from our public library and read it first on my own. The format of the book is several short chapters filled with great information followed by questions submitted by girls, which then the author goes on to answer. The book is written in words that are easy for kids to understand and the illustrations are clever and funny. In the other reviews, I read about concerns with the subject of masturbation. That is found ONLY in a question in the Q & A section of Chapter 7. I personally did not feel comfortable with the topic at our age group so when I BOUGHT our own copy, I just tore page 79-80 out and by doing so I didn't disturb neither the end of Chapter 7 nor the beginning of Chapter 8. Overall, this is a great book to get the conversation started with my daughter (almost 10) that has just started taking the leap from little girl to young lady. I have three daughters and I will use this book with all three. Hope this helps...

What a great help!
I just bought this book for my 8 year old daughter. I was still getting over the shock of my baby starting puberty so early, when I read the reviews of this book. We picked it up last night and read the whole thing. With each chapter, she became more and more interested and even kind of excited. It let her know she was normal, and showed her what will be happening in the future so she won't be so confused. The little cartoons in it were so funny. They helped keep it light. We talked very openly about everything. I am so glad that we got this book. I think it is going to make this whole thing much easier...espcially on me!My baby is growing up! BUY THIS BOOK!

A little too much detail in spots, but overall, good book.
I bought this book for my 9 year old daughter. We read a little bit together, and then I skimmed the book, and she read a bunch on her own. The book is well written for girls in the 9-11 age range - I wouldn't go much below the age of 9, however, without being very selective of what the child reads (there is a brief discussion, for example, about masturbation and orgasm, which I think is a bit *too* much for a book of this level). All in all, I think it explained the changes of puberty in very plain language that a young girl can understand, and it's set up in a way that encourages discussion - although again, sometimes it suggests discussing things with friends, which I find to be a poor recommendation considering the age and topic. I do think my daughter came away with a solid understanding of what puberty is and what physical changes are going to take place.

With humour and sensitivity, Boys, Girls & Body Science provides no-nonsense answers for children - and parents - with questions about sex. Specifically designed for young readers, Boys, Girls & Body Science walks children through the wonders of their bodies in a direct, easy-to-read manner. The story begins with Nicholas, 7, and Jenny, 5, learning about different types of science in their class - from ecology to the digestive system. Then Meg Hickling, a guest speaker, comes to talk to them about a new type of science. Hickling talks about the "science names" for the children's body parts, about good and bad touches and about making babies. She coaches the children not to be embarrassed or shy about body science: "We are going to make this just like a science lesson, we will learn to think like a scientist and we will learn the scientific names for our private parts," she says.

Hickling is a Registered Nurse who has been teaching sexual education for over 25 years. She is an outstanding educator, and her ability to convey difficult material with sensitivity, gentle humour and warmth distinguishes her as a remarkable teacher and role model. In this latest publication, Hickling brings her award-winning lesson into the homes, schools and libraries of inquisitive children everywhere!

Review :
Great approach, well-written, great book
I took a chance buying this book when no-one had written any reviews about it, but the publisher write-up looked so good I had to give it a try - and I am quite glad I did. In the book, Meg, a nurse, is invited to a classroom to explain about what she calls 'body science' (reproduction). In a most gentle, sensitive, and delicate manner, she teaches the children to think about 'embarrassing' things in the way that a scientist would, then she goes on to teach about those 'embarrassing' subjects. This book is written on a very basic level, big illustrations and only a few paragraphs of text on each page, obviously written for a younger audience. The book perceptively takes into account what the children's responses and reactions may be, which makes the reader feel like they are understood, and makes them feel at ease. My 8 year old daughter understood everything and was not 'grossed out' at all, to her it was all very matter-of-fact, but my 10 year old son groaned a big 'yuck' at...
Perfect Book!
I bought this book for my 10 yr old son. I made sure I read it first then gave it to him to read. We followed with a great discussion. I had researched a lot of other books and now that I have had the book/conversation with my son I am glad I chose this book! I was not ready to discuss masterbating, wet dreams or homosexuality with my child yet and this book DID NOT mention these things. It was simple and straightforward. A perfect Primary Grade Book!

Perfect book on the facts of life for my 8 year old
This is really an extraordinarily well balanced presentation of the facts of life for an 8 or 9 year old. The characters in the book reacted exactly like my 8 year old when hearing the somewhat embarrassing (for him) facts of life. My son laughed pretty hard as the character in the book said "Yuck!" when hearing how babies are made. This book had tactful but direct illustrations and overall the book is a wonderful aide to any parent who wants to make sure their children understand the basic facts of life.
