Another Delightful Mystery in this Series
Got a copy of this book prior to publication (won it in a contest!), and am very glad I did! Janet Dawson skillfully waves a mysterious tale while giving her historical mystery fans a delightful look at days gone by, when traveling by train -- in this case, the California Zephyr -- was a relaxing, comfortable experience. That, however, doesn't stop someone from taking exception to one of the passengers, and once again Jill McLeod, the "Zephyrette," i.e., hostess aboard the west-bound, San Francisco train is called upon to uncover a murderer. Which she does, in fine fashion.

The glimpses of passengers and train personnel are well developed, and interspersed with the fine amount of research that Ms. Dawson brings to the book (also developed in the first entry in this series), make for an entertaining tale. There's just enough backstory to keep people interested in what Jill is doing in her life (which hopefully includes many more train trips!), and she is a...

A great mystery with interesting characters

Jack Stratton is a cop. We first meet him on a night shift where he single-handedly 'calms down' three drunken lumberjacks who were causing trouble in a bar. After a stressful night he returns to his apartment only to find a naked girl in the shower and a very pissed off girlfriend. The naked girl turns out to be his foster sister whom he hadn't seen for many years. She tells him that his best friend's sister has disappeared and he's the only person who can help find her.

That's how the story begins and it only gets better from there.

This was a great book. A mystery that gets more and more complicated, interesting characters and great humor. I found myself laughing out loud quite a lot and I rarely do that when reading a book. I think that humor helped balance out the darker parts of the story which made the book even better.

I'm looking forward to other mysteries that Jack and Replacement solve together.

A well written thrilling mystery

Girl Jaked got me hooked for the next book. It is not only a thrilling mystery; it is a character study of two lovable - in spite of their hang-ups - people. the characters are all well developed and the descriptions are written works of art. I was impressed with the respectful approach to God, even though the hero isn't a Christian. The last traumatic scene was very impressive too.

Girl Jacked, written by, revolved around a policeman named Jack. After discovering that the sister of his best friend from high school had gone missing, he is determined to take this case into his own hands. I liked the main character, Jack, a lot. There’s really no reason not to like him. He’s tough, he’s smart, determined and has a strong sense of ethics. However, he also experienced flashbacks of his time serving in the military. I found them to be insightul and help paint a better picture of his character. Also, I think the author did an excellent job of summing up Jack;s early years as a child in the scene in which Jack explains why he named himself Jack. Over all, Jack was a solidly built character...

Who knew Montana could be so fun?

I bought this set for one reason: Kiska. And like all Malamutes, he doesn't disappoint! The author paints Kiska as a true representative of the breed, resisting the temptation to turn a fictional Malamute into a crime-solving, sheep-herding, do-it-all super-dog. Instead, Kiska is an irresistible lovable oaf, displaying the same penchant for (usually) mild mischief that makes all Malamute aficionados feel that they really are super-dogs, no matter what anybody else might think.

Aside from Kiska, the books are all-around delightful. Lucy Mathews is an interesting, likeable heroine whose clever narrative draws you into both the mundane and the bizarre of her every-day life. The supporting characters, just like in real life, vary in how likeable they are, but are all well developed and believable. I'm looking forward to more Dusty Deals mysteries!

Helena, Montana sounds like a fun place.

Lucy, an antiques store owner and part time reporter, seems to stumble over a lot of dead bodies, literally. Lucy avoids conflict and confrontation like the plaque which is not a great trait for a so-called reporter confronting intimidating cops. Kiska, her Malamute, oft mistaken for a Husky, is a Bon companion. With auctions, rodeos, rodeo queens, sheep herding and vegan protestors running amuck things get interesting fast. Lots of fun situations for Lucy, Kiska and Pauline, the goose. A funny mystery series with laughs, twists and romance.

Fun to read and hard to put down

I'm about halfway through book 3 now, and I love this girl! It's just a fun book to read. I have to add that I like the fact that there's very little profanity and I haven't seen a sex scene yet. If this was a movie, it'd be family friendly. Good job Rae Davies for still writing good, clean, fun, entertaining books!!! Montana, cowboys, and dogs are a plus too.
